Reported by The Town of Chapel Hill:  Colorful crosswalks coming to Cameron Avenue and Rosemary Street

New colorful crosswalks will soon be installed at three locations in Chapel Hill. The installation will prompt street resurfacing and lane closures near the intersection of Cameron Avenue and Wilson Street and at the entrance of Granville Towers.

New colorful crosswalks will soon be installed at three locations in Chapel Hill. The installation will prompt street resurfacing and lane closures near the intersection of Cameron Avenue and Wilson Street and at the entrance of Granville Towers.

To ensure longevity of the new crosswalks, the pavement in the intersection will be milled and repaved before the crosswalks are painted. The milling and patching will take place Thursday, Dec. 1, followed by paving Friday, Dec. 2. Work will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until about 7 p.m. each day.

Two-way traffic will be maintained during the project with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone. People who drive should anticipate minor delays Thursday and Friday.

Paving on Rosemary Street was substantially completed early this week.

Colorful Crosswalks Designer crosswalks at the following three locations are scheduled to be installed in the coming weeks.

• Cameron Avenue at Wilson Street (and the entrance to Granville Towers) (see above)
• Rosemary Street at Henderson Street
• Rosemary Street near Shortbread Lofts

Early this year a committee solicited design ideas from area artists for the new crosswalks. A basic test project was installed in March on Willow Drive off Estes Drive (near University Place) to monitor the durability of the paint through traffic, weather and regular maintenance. The designer crosswalks are part of an initiative to increase the visibility between people who walk and people who drive.
