Chapel Hill Transit Makes August Service Adjustments

​Service changes begin Monday, August 12, 2019

Chapel Hill Transit will implement service adjustments as part of its August service schedules to increase reliability, meet ridership demands and improve connections to employment and retail centers. The increased service is being funded by the Orange County Transit Plan, which has been providing funding for transit service improvements for Chapel Hill Transit since 2013. These changes will take effect on Monday, August 12, 2019.

More Service: 

NS Route – adding AM peak trips (7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.) between Eubanks Park and Ride and UNC Hospital, to ease overcrowding and increase travel options.

CM and CW Routes — extending all evening trips (7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.) on both routes to operate in both directions between Chapel Hill, Campus and Carrboro.

HS Route — new routing will serve Rogers Road, High School Road and Homestead and extend to serve the University, UNC Hospital, Campus, Smith Level Road and Culbreth Road, to provide better access to employment, community facilities and schools along the route. The route will operate weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., 60-minute frequency. Route will not serve Seawell School Road between Estes Drive and High School Road. The last day of service for the two stops on Seawell School Road will be Friday, August 9, 2019. 

Chapel Hill Transit will also implement some schedule and route adjustments effective Monday, August 12, 2019. Chapel Hill Transit generally makes changes to its schedules in January, May and August, in response to ridership trends, changing traffic patterns and growth in the area.

Service Adjustments:

​A Limited — will be eliminated due to lower ridership demand on Hillsborough Street and increased service on the NS route. The A, NU and HS routes will serve Hillsborough Street.

D Route — to improve frequency and eliminate overcrowding in a high‐ridership corridor, the route will terminate at UNC Hospitals starting August 12, 2019. This improvement will allow for additional D trips serving the University, UNC Hospital, Franklin Street, Elliott Road and Blue Hill District between 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The route will not serve Culbreth Road (served by extension of new HS route) and Smith Level Road (served by J route and new HS route extension). Last day of D route service on Culbreth Road will be Friday, August 9, 2019. 

NU Route — weekday and weekend service will resume on Monday, August 12, 2019.

 U Route — weekend service will resume on Saturday, August 17, 2019.

Bus Stops — the stops on Hillsborough Street at Midtown Market (Hunam Chinese) and between the Mobil gas station and Lloyd Tire (#3246 & #3247) will be eliminated due to safety concerns, very low usage and the availability of several surrounding stops. The stop at Pittsboro Street and University Drive (#3224) will not be served by the CW route (weekday and weekend) due to safety concerns, however other routes will continue to serve this stop.

​Safe Rides — Service will resume on Thursday, August 22, 2019, and will operate on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings when the University is in session.

EZ Rider — will operate Monday-Friday from 5 a.m. to 11:17 p.m., Saturdays from 8:15 a.m. to 11:17 p.m. and Sundays from 10:38 a.m. until 11:17 p.m. (Premium Service will operate on a space-available basis from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).

August schedules are will be available on our website at chtransit.org the week of July 8, 2019 and printed schedules will be available on buses by the week of August 5, 2019.

Updating the Bus Fleet

With investments from our funding partners (Town of Chapel Hill, Town of Carrboro and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Orange County Transit Plan funds and federal/state grants we have purchased 36 new low-floor buses over the past three years, retiring some of the oldest buses in our fleet. We will also place an order for three (3) electric buses this fall and will also continue to seek funding to expand our electric bus purchases.

Bus Stop Improvements 

Sidewalk, shelter and other improvements for 18 stops will be undertaken over the summer and fall to ensure stops meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and to improve the customer experience. An additional 20 stops will be reviewed for sidewalk and shelter improvements this fall. We will also be testing some new shelter styles and new solar powered real-time bus information signs at stops throughout the system

The 2019 NC BikeWalk Summit in Winston-Salem promises to be packed full of information useful to bicycle advocates, transportation planners, business owners, elected officials, tactical urbanists, public health practitioners, and livability and sustainability professionals. Experts from across the state and beyond will be on hand to share their knowledge and experience. The mission of the summit is to

  • Foster collaboration between North Carolina’s various bicycle advocates as well as movements, efforts, and endeavors;
  • Educate local government staff, bicycle advocates, and policy leaders;
  • Promote bicycling as a valid form of transportation and as an economic driver; and
  • Highlight North Carolina’s dedication toward becoming a premier bicycle friendly state.

Traffic Bicycling for Transportation Professionals  

The Traffic Bicycling class (click on link for more info) is oriented toward transportation engineers, planners, and police, but open to all adults. This intensive 9-hour on-bike training course teaches best practices for bicycle operation in urban traffic. Participants improve their understanding of effective traffic negotiation techniques and relevant traffic laws while enhancing their bike handling skills and increasing their confidence. Common bicyclist crash types are examined in the context of operator behavior. Implications for transportation planning, facility design, and law enforcement are discussed. Students will receive certification for completing League of American Bicyclists Traffic Skills 101, which is a prerequisite for LCI certification. The class is taught by Master LCI Instructor Steven Goodridge, and includes both classroom and on-bike portions. Steve has taught this class at the last several Bike Summits to rave reviews. The class is offered at the special rate of $50.

Pre-Summit Workshop Thursday November 7, noon–5pm
Training the Trainers: Learn to Lead a Walk Audit

Be the change you want in your community! “Train the Trainers” is offered by the energetic nationally-known public health and transportation consultant and former Olympic race walker Mark Fenton, who will instruct you in how to be a Neighborhood Walk Auditor, capable of spotting problems and confident in your new ability to show others how to identify problems and communicate with decision-makers. This class will run from noon to 5, and is also being offered at the special rate of $50. An excellent training course for public health officials, Town employees, planners, advocates for safe routes to school and other advocates for safer, more equitable communities. (We are applying for PDH and CM certification for engineers and planners for this course.)

Accommodations:

We have reserved a block of rooms at the Hawthorne Inn at a special rate of for attendees. When planning your trip, note that the Traffic Bicycling course begins at 8 am on Thursday morning. Public Meetings: Bus Rapid Transit & Land Use Development

Upcoming Public Meetings and Outreach

Join us for a series of community events. July 12th through July 15th, that will focus on the N-S BRT Station Design and Land Use Development! Your feedback and ideas from these events will help shape and inform the route’s stations and nearby areas.

The series will begin with a Chapel Hill Town Council Work Session on Friday, July 12th at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. This work session is open to the public.

A Community Input Session will follow on Saturday, July 13th at 10:00 a.m. at The Franklin Hotel. The project staff will also hold Public Q&A sessions/Open House on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00-5:00 p.m.  NOTE:  the Saturday, July 13 Public Meeting will start with a presentation at 10:00 a.m.  The Open Houses are designed as a drop-in experience.  Focus Groups are conducted by a facilitator and are open to invited guests and the public as well.  Please contact project staff via email to join a Focus Group.

The series will conclude on Monday with a presentation at 5:30 p.m. to the Town Council, which will be held in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. A full schedule of events can be found at http://www.townofchapelhill.org .
